SUBITIZING: This is one of the foundational skills of math. It is the ability to recognize and visualize small numbers without counting. Does your student still count on their fingers to solve simple math problems? Is your student struggling with addition, subtraction? Trying some Subitizing activities at home may help. This article from Third Space Learning has some great information about what subitizing is and how you can practice it at home. https://thirdspacelearning.com/us/blog/what-is-subitizing/

PHONOGRAMS: The smallest parts of speech and written words are key to helping early readers decode well. English has 26 letters, which make 44 sounds with 72 common spelling patterns. For instance the letter A can make three sounds /a/ as in cat, A and in cane, and aw as in call. You can also spell the A sound with other letters like ai as in wait. Some letters only make one sound like B says /b/ as in ball. Understanding these spelling patterns and the sounds they make greatly improve your student’s ability to read and decode words. For more about the 72 phonograms check out this article from Thrive Literacy Corner. Delilah Orpi is a literacy specialist, an experienced educator, and a great resource for literacy questions.
